LFO lead singer Rich Cronin, 35, dies after battle with leukemia

Rich Cronin, the lead singer and founder of the late-1990s boy band LFO, has passed away after a long battle with leukemia, according to reports from TMZ and E! News. He was 35. LFO, or the Lyte Funky Ones, were best known for the 1999 beach-y hit “Summer Girls,” which included the renown of-the-moment lyric penned by Cronin, “I like girls that wear Abercrombie & Fitch.” The video for their follow-up, “Girls on TV,” featured Cronin’s then-girlfriend Jennifer Love Hewitt. The band split in 2002. In 2005, Cronin was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. Two years later, his cancer in remission, Cronin — along with former boy banders Jeff Timmons (of 98 Degrees), Bryan Abrams (of Color Me Badd), and Chris Kirkpatrick (of ’N Sync) — starred in the VH1 reality series Mission: Man Band, about the quartet’s struggle to start up a new band.

Kirkpatrick updated his Facebook profile today with the message “RIP to a great friend Rich C.” Lance Bass also posted to Twitter with the message, ”Sad sad day that Rich Cronin died – was an amazing guy.”

In 2006, Cronin, looking back on his career, told EW, “I am truly thankful for the success I had. And if it happens again, that’d be really nice. I’m just that same guy writing pop songs to make people happy. And I still only like girls in Abercrombie & Fitch.”

Rich Cronin – Lead Singer of LFO Succumbs To Leukemia – Babble

Rich Cronin, the former lead singer of the pop group LFO, has passed away after a long battle with leukemia at the age of 35, TMZ.com is reporting. The singer, who penned the group’s smash hit song ‘Summer Girls’ in 1999, suffered a stroke as a result of his leukemia, and reportedly passed away this afternoon as a result.

Cronin was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia in March of 2005, after suffering from constant headaches. Initial treatment was successful and in January of 2006 he went into remission. He even developed his own foundation called the Rich Cronin Hope Foundation with a goal of raising awareness of the disease as well as hoping to promote blood donation and encourage people to donate bone marrow.

Loudon – Road racers found a newly configured turn 2 for Friday practice. Eric Wood explained; “The staff at NHMS paved the left side of turn 2 to make room for a 1/5th mile Legends Car oval at the south end of the speedway. We rode on the configuration that several track day providers laid out on Thursday and on Thursday night, LRRS modified the row of cones to construct a turn 2 apex that was similar to what we had over the past several seasons. The goal was to redirect the apex crash zone for turn 2 back towards the airfence and to also slow down the apex speed in order to lessen the potential to reach the wall in the event of a crash. These efforts also helped to lessen the effect of the bump at the transition.”

Wood continued; “After testing this all day Friday, LRRS then constructed a white line to mark the inside of turn 2, and held riders off the line by spacing a row of airfence about 3 feet to the inside of the turn. This gave riders a good temporary turn without the hazard of cones that often get knocked into the racing line. As a bonus, the new layout gave riders a much better and safer pit out system that fed riders predictably onto the racing line on the back straight between turns 2 and 3. Racers were generally happy with the layout and the weekend went off without incident in turn 2. For the future, LRRS will consult with our top riders who will help determine if further improvements can be made to the shape of turn 2. NHMS plans to purchase some removable low profile curbing to use on the inside of turn 2 as a permanent solution.”

Argo Cycle’s Scott Greenwood remarked on the shape of the new turn; “I can’t tell whether it’s slower or faster yet. Both Eric and I ran low elevens on it. Right now it’s a little narrower coming from turn 1A.”

Seacoast Sport Cycle’s, Jim Rich commented; “I like it. I set a new fast time with it. It’s got bumps, but I just roll over it.”

Meanwhile, Eric Wood found even more speed on Sunday, turning a fast lap of 1:10.6 in winning his Unlimited Grand Prix sprint race aboard his Dunlop equipped Ducati 1098. Cory Hildebrand stole the holeshot aboard his Bruce Transportation Yamaha R1, but was overtaken by Wood on the brakes in turn three of the first lap. Hildebrand was right in his tail section until falling a couple laps later. Brett Guyer took over second place aboard his Seacoast Aprilia RSV4 and held it to the flag over a lonely Rob Nigl in third.

The 3rd annual Ms. Match featured a good battle between Jackie Wood on her Honda CRF 450 and Lori Shaw aboard her Aprilia SXV 550. Wood came out on top, stretching her lead late. Keri Smith did a terrific job coming from the back to snag 3rd place on the last lap.

Middleweight Supersport turned into barn burner early, as Christian Cronin took a commanding holeshot over Scott Greenwood and brought Hildebrand’s R6 with him. Not to be denied, Greenwood powered into second place on the back stretch and took Cronin on the brakes going into turn 3. From there, he steadily built his lead, while Cronin and Hildebrand scrapped over second. Running nose to tail lap after lap, Cronin managed a big enough gap on the last lap to hold Hildebrand off at the flag. David Fett rode to a lonely fourth place followed by a strong ride from Chris Carella in fifth.

Greenwood won six races aboard his Dunlop shod Argo Cycles Yamaha. Rick Doucette won four races with his Plaistow Power Sports machines, while Mike Martire won three races aboard his GMD/Michelin Kawasaki KX 450. Other multiple winners included Jeff Wood, Eric Wood and Mark Dages.

Sunday morning featured the annual Larry Lap for Larry Hanlon’s Brain Injury Recovery charity. Over 175 riders participated in an event that gets bigger every season. The Loudon Road Racing Series will wrap up the 2010 season on October 2-3.

Jeff Wood of the Penguin Racing School had a successful debut on his Ducati Monster 696 during the LRRS races at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Labor Day weekend. The Penguin School has been using the 696 as an instructor machine for the past year and the staff has found it to be a surprisingly capable machine.

“When we first got the Monsters in we knew that they were a great street bike”, said Penguin Advanced Instructor Eric Wood, “but we were really surprised how well they reacted to being ridden hard out on the racetrack. The strength of the chassis on the Monster made it the best handling air-cooled Ducati we had ridden to date and prompted us to build a race bike out of it”.

The modifications to the bike consisted of engine preparation performed by Seacoast Sport Cycle and a set of factory Ducati slipons. Woodcraft rearsets, frame sliders and axle sliders were added and GMD Computrack set the bike up with a Penske Shock and revalved forks. All else on the bike was 100% stock.

Jeff started off racing in the GTL class and had a race long duel with Rick Doucette, a Suzuki SV650 rider with nearly 40 LRRS championships. The naked Monster 696 had more than enough power to match the SV down the straights, and Jeff got the chassis dialed in well for the highly technical Loudon track. Jeff won a hard fought battle and at the end of the race hung on to win by just under 2 seconds.

Between races Peter Kates from GMD Computrack made some adjustments to the forks to give Jeff better feel on the brakes. Jeff went on to handily win the Ultralightweight Superbike Race, a class that is build perfectly for the 696. After the race Jeff commented “I was really happy with the bike at the end of the day. After only one round of adjustments we had the chassis working nearly perfectly….it turned very well and offered really good feedback. I think that this will make a great race bike for anyone looking to enter the lightweight class for next season”.

Fort Mill to unveil new plaza Sept. 18

FORT MILL Guynn Savage knows what the foot of Main Street used to look like before the retaining wall crumbled.

“When I was a child, a beautiful Victorian home sat on that hill,” Savage, a Fort Mill Town Council member, said. “The lady who owned it bloomed hundreds of daffodils and had beautiful landscaping that added a feeling of warmth to the downtown area.”

Since Savage’s childhood days, that “meticulous” upkeep waned. More recently, the retaining wall crumbled, leaving pieces of the wall and a black silt fence behind. Some called that town gateway “scenery” an eyesore.

Now, brickwork showcasing Fort Mill’s name tells another story of a plaza that will be a hub for locals and visitors to take time out and enjoy the downtown scenery.

The Town of Fort Mill will debut its plaza during a dedication service at 10 a.m. Sept. 18 at the plaza located across the street from the town’s red caboose near the intersection of White and Main streets.

Wink Rea of Move Fort Mill Forward frequently works in that red caboose anchored across the street from the plaza.

“It gives you a very nice vista of the downtown area,” Rea said of the plaza. “It does provide an area to sit, picnic and reminisce.”

The plaza offers green space for those picnics. Steps help attendees better manage the hill. A bench or two may be added at a later date.

“It turned out great,” Town Manager David Hudspeth said. “We’re still working on some last minute details.”

Savage is excited about the rehab project.

“It continues to improve the appearance of our downtown,” Savage said. “It better showcases the community’s nature to those who visit. It invites one to do more than drive pass our Main Street.”

The plaza also pays homage to Fort Mill’s rich history. The town was named after a fort and a gristmill. At the center of the plaza will be a millstone.

“The millstone is a recognition of the old Garrison-Webb Gristmill,” Asst. Town Manager Joe Cronin said. “Fort Mill grew up around that gristmill. People came to the mill to ground wheat and corn into usable products like cornmeal and flour. The millstone comes from the mill from which the town got its name.”

Until last month that millstone was being used as a stepping stone at the Georgia home of Josephine Culp Williams, the granddaughter of Thomas Gibbons Culp, who was serving as Fort Mill’s mayor when he died in 1903, Williams told the Fort Mill Times.

Now, the millstone is back in Fort Mill. At the plaza, the millstone will rest atop a pedestal for all to see.

“It’s a nod to Fort Mill’s history,” Cronin said. “The fact that we were able to track down the millstone, which was a piece of this community’s history, and place it in a spot of significance.” Town leaders continue to consider amenities for the unnamed plaza. A name could be decided as early as Sept.13 during the next regularly scheduled Fort Mill Town Council meeting.

For now, motorists take in the scene unfolding at the foot of Main Street.

“It makes a statement,” Cronin said. “We get a lot of traffic that goes up and down Main Street. If you’re sitting at the traffic light, it’s really a great anchor to have at the foot of our historic district.”

Three Tips on Using Google Instant

On Wednesday, Google began rolling out a major change to the way its search engine delivers results onscreen. Results now appear while you are still typing your search query. If you keep typing, Google’s results change to match.

Called Google Instant, it is the default search for all desktop and laptop users who go to google.com on the most popular browsers — Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Google’s own Chrome. (As of this moment, I am using Instant on Chrome, Firefox and Safari. It has not yet appeared in my Internet Explorer 8 browser. Google spokesman Nate Tyler said it should appear soon.

Google Instant, which you can read about on Google’s Web site and also on the company’s blog, is very self-explanatory, except for three how-to issues .

First, as you type, Google delivers the searchthe most likely completion of your search terms. It also pops up a list of five most likely completions for your search. If you want to scroll through the instantthose alternate completions, don’t click on them with your mouse. Instead, use the arrow keys on your computer’s keyboard to hop down and up through them. If you instead click on one of the alternate completions, Google will make the rest of the list go away and show you thethat one term.

Second, if you access Google through a browser toolbar or through the Chrome browser’s omnibar, Google Instant will not yet work for you. To get the Instant results, go to Google.com and use that instead. (It also is not ready for mobile phones yet, the company said.)

Third, if you really hate it, here’s how to turn it off: If your browser has Google Instant enabled, go to the google.com homepage and look to the right of the search box. You should see a link in tiny blue type: “Instant is on.” Click that, and up pops a menu to turn Google Instant on or off, as well as another option to learn more about the feature.

Google Instant uses much less Internet bandwidth than you might think, because its proposed search results are optimized to take up very little data space compared to even a small photo. Also, if you have configured Google to deliver more than ten search results per page, the Instant feature will set your results count back to ten. If you prefer to read through long lists of results, turn Instant off.

The Google home page is sporting a new logo that changes color as you type, and it’s likely a big hint as to what the company will announce at its “can’t miss” search event on Wednesday.

When you arrive on the search giant home page today, you’ll be greeted with a gray Google doodle. When you start typing a search query, though, the color magically returns to Google’s iconic logo. This follows yesterday’s logo, a collection of animated particles that react to the movement of the cursor.

As many in the media have noted, this week’s series of logos isn’t just Googlers having fun. It’s also a big hint for what the company will be unveiling at a press event Wednesday morning in San Francisco.

If today’s logo is any indication, Google is about to unveil a real-time search overhaul. This is not about adding Twitter or Facebook results to Google search, though. This is about search results that change as you type, a feature Google has been testing recently. Also likely to be announced tomorrow: AJAX-powered search results.

9:38 A.M. PT: We’re going to start with a “State of the Union” speech about Google search. The emphasis, of course, is on speed and making the search experience fast.

9:39: “One part art, one part science.”

9:41: Now Mayer is discussing some of the new features of Google Search (Google search). Google Caffeine, Real-Time Search, timeline views, spell corrections, enhancements to its Q&A, stars in search, etc.

9:43: Mayer is discussing the Google redesign that launched in May. And now she’s playing the commercial the company aired during the Super Bowl.

9:48: She’s discussing the Lichtenstein Mirror painting, which is only at MOMA during certain times. Google search can help you learn more about it and figure out where it is.

9:48: It takes a user nine seconds to enter a query into Google. It takes 800 ms for networking time, 300 ms for serving results, and 15 seconds to select a search result.

9:50: The problem to increasing search speed is the nine seconds to type and the 15 seconds browsing results. It takes time to type and think, plain and simple. But Google thinks it can make this even more efficient.

9:51: Launching: Google Instant.

9:52: Google Instant automatically pulls up search results as you type. There is no hitting the enter button at all. The results appear as soon as you type a letter. It predicts what you’re about to type and delivers results based on those predictions.

9:53: The demo … wow, that’s fast. You just have to hit “tab” to complete a search query, or you can scroll up and down with the arrow keys to see searchdifferent related or predicted queries.

9:54: The demo continues. “Fauvism” is the search term. With “Fauv,” Google already displays the search results. Mayer doesn’t call this “search as you type,” but “search before you type.” It’s about the predictive technology.

9:56: Mayer is talking about a 2000 April Fool’s Day joke from Google, MentalPlex, which supposedly predicted search.

9:57: Available on Chrome, Firefox, Safari and IE8 starting today. It rolls out today in the U.S., and it’ll roll out internationally in the next week. U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Russia if you’re signed into your Google account.

9:58: Now the Google Instant team is on stage. Johanna Wright, director of product management, and Othar Hansson, senior staff software engineer.

10:00: With one keystroke, “w,” you’ll instantly get your weather forecast. Wow.

10:01: Hansson types “the gi.” The gray text that appears after what you’ve typed is called the predicted text. In this case, it’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

10:03: Scroll to search demo. “Yose” predicts Yosemite National Park. By pressing the down arrow, you can see lodging, maps, camping, weather, etc.

10:06: “What the heck is the search button there for, anyway?” Since search results are instant. If you hit “enter,” it ends your search where you typed, rather than what it predicts you’ll type. The same goes for the search button.

10:09: “Caval” gets you the sports team. “Cavalier k” gets you the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

10:11: Google Instant is coming to mobile this fall! Google is demo-ing it on a Droid. As you start typing, Google will provide search results instantly, even on mobile.

10:14: “We must do it, and we must do it now.” Ben Gomes is now on stage speaking about the challenges of Google Instant. It’s about UI and UX and making it so that Google Instant doesn’t melt the company’s servers.

10:19: Now Google is discussing the research behind Google Instant. The company is showing off how users look at a Web page, specifically tracking eye movements.

10:20: Google is turning search into an AJAX application. It has done it with Gmail and other apps, but never with search. They’re discussing how Google Instant works. Specifically, how auto-complete search requests are sent automatically to Google’s servers and then predictions and search results pages should come back. The experience doesn’t work if the browser takes more time to render the javascript than to send the queries back and forth.

10:23: Twenty billion searches a day. The company is talking about why they are scaled for so many searches, when there aren’t even that many people on the planet.

10:24: Optimizations. Prioritizing searches was important to scaling Google Instant.

10:26: It’s a big team that made this happen. They have dozens of faces on the main projector screen. There are also two counters that are increasing from 34,000+. It refers to the hours saved by Google Instant.

Google has built an empire on the open web. But suddenly there are signs the company is shifting toward a more insular application-based future like the one Apple is built on. What’s going on here?

“Wired” recently made waves with its August cover story asserting “the web is dead.” Some argue that this is overstating and oversimplifying the case, but certainly a new internet landscape is in fact taking shape—one based on the insular offerings of applications rather than the open fluidity of surfing the web on a personal computer.

This would seem to spell trouble for Google, whose primary value has been in connecting all points on the open web, serving as a lubricant to provide the very fluidity that is the web’s most defining feature.

But over the last years, Google began to shift its center of gravity—quietly at first, and then quite loudly, with CEO Eric Schmidt’s kenote speech today in Berlin marking a particularly voluble moment in the transition.

Last year marked Google’s first foray into the hardware market with the Android phone, the first real sign that it was embracing the captive audience that comes with proprietary hardware and the applications it runs.

Then recently it was reported that Google was aiming to launch a competitor to iTunes by Christmas, then yesterday the company announced plans to launch Google TV next year. Then came the kicker: today’s speech on the future of search.

“Schmidt says he believes that in the future, your mobile phone will quickly and automatically deliver personalized information to you based on your physical location and interests,” reports the NY Times.

“When I walk down the street,” Schmidt relayed in his speech, “I want my smartphone to be doing searches constantly – ‘did you know?’, ‘did you know?’, ‘did you know?’, ‘did you know?’.”

What this means is that the future of search may look a lot more like the way you interact with iTunes than the way you currently interact with Google.

You currently use Google as a conduit to hop around to all kinds of different locations on the wide-open web. As mobile devices get more sophisticated and take up more and more of our time spent on personal computing, as most studies suggest they will, the one-on-one relationship of the consumer to the application may start to overshadow the infinite web of relationships an individual confronts on the World Wide Web.

To me, the new developments at Google signify that, like all great companies and great executives, Google will adapt to the times. No matter how big and ubiquitous they may be, if Google can stay sensitive to what consumers want Eric Schmidt just may find his way into our hearts and establish the kind of brand loyalty long reserved for Apple.

Google’s now offering real-time predictive search on its homepage, at least for anyone signed into a Google account (expect the service to go wide in the next short while). Some online pundits have suggested that Google’s just pulled off the Internet version of New Coke–a supposedly better product that nobody really asked for–but I’m sort of liking the instant results, which seem to make the whole search process a little faster.

But this is Microsoft Watch, so I’m also thinking about how this might affect Bing. For the moment, Microsoft seems to be sticking with ye olde fashioned model, suggesting possible search terms as you type but not offering real-time links. At least, not yet: if past trends are any indication, Microsoft will attempt to one-up Google with a predictive search feature of its very own, possibly within the next few weeks.

At the same time, though, Bing seems to be diverging from Google in certain key ways. Back in March, Bing Director Stefan Weitz pointed out to eWEEK that Google maintained an epic lead in traditional keyword-based search, compelling Microsoft to focus more on verticals such as commercial-based queries and travel.

“People are creatures of habit and they’re fairly happy with Google’s keyword search today and they think it works well,” he said at the time, “and there’s no reason for them to look around.”

At the same time, Weitz added: “It’s not a zero-sum game … We think we can expand that which people do with these engines. We can grow the overall pie, the overall number of searches that are happening across the Web.” That means focusing on areas such as Bing Shopping, or instantly connecting users to theater show-times–and in turn leads to features such as Local Events, which studs a map with pins showing the day’s happenings around a particular location.

By the time June rolled around, Microsoft had expanded its verticals, offering an Entertainment tab centered on music, movies and games. That addition gave Bing the feeling of a Yahoo-like Web portal; not only could you search for terms from the main search page, but with two or three clicks you could also watch movie trailers or stream a song via the company’s Zune service.

In other words, Microsoft may follow Google’s latest foray into real time, but the two companies’ search engines seem to be diverging somewhat in their respective missions and features.

There is a rumor flying around the internet today that adult film star Bieyanka Moore, aka Charrida Smalley Bieyanka Moore is not really an adult, and is in fact only 15 years old. If this is the case, several adult websites and studios could be facing a laundry list of charges. The US Government takes this kind of thing extremely seriously, and leaves it up to the content generators to make sure that all models and actors are at least 18 years of age

Only a few minutes ago, Bieyanka Moore herself appears to have sent a message to all those creating and spreading these rumors.
